Empowering the Next Generation of Young Farmers through Apprenticeship
The Center for Entrepreneurial Food Producers in Indonesia exists to train young (under 40 yrs old) food producers with entry level involvement in sustainable agribusiness activities. They will train small and medium scale food producers in both production and agribusiness practices. This happens through a 15-week residential apprenticeship on a 22 acre farm located in Indonesia.
Building the Foundation
From its inception, CEFP was advancing rapidly forward towards its mission by assembling a team of dedicated professionals to lead the charge. Recruiting key roles such as Human Resources Director, Production Director, Training Director, and Farm Maintenance Supervisor laid the groundwork for success. By early 2023, curriculum development, Organic Production Certification, and Training Certification were completed, signaling a crucial milestone in the center's journey.
Additionally, significant infrastructure enhancements were undertaken to ensure a conducive learning environment. Renovations to two living quarters, an office space, teaching centers (an Agro-technology Center), and seedling nurseries were completed. New construction projects including dining areas, guesthouses, and storage units further bolstered the facilities. Moreover, improvements in stormwater management, upgrading electrical lines, road repair, and land development were made to optimize operational efficiency. They were even able to purchase a delivery truck to help bring their produce to market.
Empowering Local Communities
CEFP's impact extended beyond its immediate vicinity from the beginning by helping to clear nearly 15 hectares to intensive vegetable cultivation. This process included removal of all trees and shrubs, black plastic mulching, and ceasing the use of full chemical applications including synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. This was to restore the availability of uncontaminated grass for sheep and goats which are a mainstay of the local farming system. The CEFP constructed sheep and goat pens on their organically managed land and made these available to local farmers. The arrangement provides a safe and healthy location for local farmers to own and raise their livestock while providing valuable organic manure for the CEFP. They also worked on opening up more land for new fields on their own property.
Nurturing Future Leaders
The true essence of CEFP lies in its apprenticeship program, which commenced in mid-June with a cohort of 14 young men aged between 18 to 26. At the end of the program, only 2 did not complete the apprenticeship (one for personal health reasons and one to take a full-time job elsewhere), while four individuals secured employment within CEFP's Job Training Farm.
Throughout the year, they grew 6450 kilograms of produce and caused around $120,000 USD to flow into the local economy because of this social enterprise. At this time, CEFP supplies produce twice a week to seven resellers as well as to an upscale cafe in neighboring cities.
Impact Story: Randy's Journey
Randy's story epitomizes the transformative potential of CEFP's initiatives. A recent high school graduate facing bleak prospects, Randy seized the opportunity presented by the Young Farmer's apprenticeship. Despite lacking prior farming experience, Randy's determination and resilience shone through.
During the program, Randy did not show a lot of natural ability in the farming skills nor aptitude for the agricultural training given. Yet, he was willing to do the undesirable tasks; hauling manure to planting locations, moving water around during dry season, and carrying produce up to the packaging area. During the program, his mother had her leg amputated. Complications required her to relocate to be with her daughter. This left Randy in charge of his younger sister, an elementary school student. He was responsible to see she had food to eat and attend school meetings requiring parents' attendance. On top of this, he was expected to send money for his mother's care.
Today, Randy is working part-time at the training farm, clearing overgrown beds to prepare them for the next vegetable planting. As additional work opportunities open up, CEFP is able to provide more work for Randy. In the process, he is improving his skills and making just enough to provide for himself and his sister. If Randy can stay the course, he can become an accomplished organic farmer in the future, remaining in his community and making a positive contribution to his family with a hope he can start a family himself and manage his own plot of land one day.
